Investigating the influence of additive polymer molecular weights on the mechanical performance of recycled thermoplastic composites

This study investigates the influence of polymer molecular weight on the properties of a flow-oriented short-fibre reinforced composite. The mechanical properties and the polymer molecular weight of such a composite are inherently linked through the flow process which orients the fibres. To study the effect of one, the others need to be characterised. The fibre orientation is measured, and the fibre interface is investigated, presenting a fair methodology to evaluate the effect of the polymer molecular weight. Results show a minimal effect on the short-term yield strength however, a significant increase in ductility can be achieved by increasing the polymer molecular weight. Presenting a method to create tougher and more durable products.
