A bibliometric analysis of research trends in ethnomathematics using the Scopus database

The study presents a bibliometric analysis of 210 Scopus-indexed publications on ethnomathematics, published between 2010 and 2024. Using VOSviewer and CiteSpace, the study examines co-authorship networks, co-citation patterns, bibliographic coupling, keyword co-occurrence, citation bursts, and timeline visualisations to map the intellectual and structural landscape of the field. The results show a significant rise in ethnomathematics research after 2018, with Indonesia emerging as the most influential contributor in terms of publication volume, citation impact, and institutional productivity, accounting for more than 40% of the total output. Author impact analysis identifies Rosa, Orey, and Gerdes as the most frequently cited scholars, and highly cited studies emphasise cultural artefacts such as batik and weaving, indigenous knowledge systems, and culturally responsive mathematics education. Science-mapping analyses provide three dominant thematic clusters: foundational ethnomathematics theory, critical and decolonial perspectives, and classroom-based pedagogical applications. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive overview of the conceptual, social, and intellectual development of ethnomathematics, identifying future research directions to strengthen culturally grounded and inclusive mathematics education globally.
