Evaluation of strain and strain rate of recycle simulant aluminum alloys based on A6082 aluminum alloy using digital image correlation method

Effects of Si, Fe, Cu contents on fracture strain, uniform strain, local strain and strain distribution were examined in a wide range of strain rate, 10‒3 s‒1 to 103 s‒1, using a digital image correlation method for two types of recycle simulant aluminum alloys based on A6082 aluminum alloy in a wide range of strain rate. The amounts of Si, Fe, and Cu, which are predicted to increase as impurities during recycling, were elevated beyond the standard range. When the Si, Fe and Cu contents were high, the fracture strain at high strain rate was small and the fracture strain under other conditions showed similar trends that the fracture strain decreased with increasing strain rate and then increased over a strain rate of 102 s‒1. The uniform strain at low strain rate was found to be large, attributable to an increase in Si, Fe and Cu contents, and decreased gradually with strain rate. When the Si, Fe and Cu contents were high, the local strain at low strain rate was small, but the Si, Fe and Cu contents did not affect strain distribution. The changes in uniform strain and local strain were explained using n and m values.
