The Effect of Genetic Polymorphism in AQP1 Gene Associated with Body Fluid Regulation on Sports Performance
Because sports performance is determined by the complex interaction of various genetic and environmental factors, it is considered a multifactorial trait from a genetic perspective. Among these, it is known that regulation of body fluid is an essential component, especially in the case of endurance. For these reasons, genetic polymorphism encoding aquaporin1(AQP1), which have important effects on body fluid regulation, are considered strong candidate genetic marker for athletic performance, especially in endurance sports events.<br/> A total of 121 unrelated male individuals were participated in this study, and they divided into controls(n = 78), power/sprint(n = 22) and endurance players(n = 21), respectively. Also, a rs1049305 genetic polymorphism in an aquaporin1(AQP1) gene were genotyped by using SNaPshot method in each study group. As a result of conducting this study, there were the significant differences in both genotype and allele frequencies of this genetic polymorphism in AQP1 gene among each group, respectively( p < .05). Especially, the frequencies of CC genotype and C allele in this genetic polymorphism were highest prevalent in endurance group than in other groups, respectively. Therefore, the presence of C allele constituting this genetic polymorphism suggests that it may have a beneficial effect on endurance-related sports performance through smooth body fluid regulation.
