Resident autonomy in pathology: bridging gaps between training and practice

We read with great interest the recent article by Bryant et al. on barriers to achieving graduated responsibility in pathology residency programs.1 The authors’ survey provides valuable insights into the heterogeneity of resident autonomy and highlights institutional barriers, particularly related to billing, privileges, and perceived patient impact. While this work fills a critical gap, several areas merit deeper consideration to strengthen its implications for training reform.

Abstract

We read with great interest the recent article by Bryant et al. on barriers to achieving graduated responsibility in pathology residency programs.1 The authors’ survey provides valuable insights into the heterogeneity of resident autonomy and highlights institutional barriers, particularly related to billing, privileges, and perceived patient impact. While this work fills a critical gap, several areas merit deeper consideration to strengthen its implications for training reform.
