Challenges and determinants of growth in agri-startups in Tamil Nadu

Agri-startups have become catalysts for transforming productivity, sustainability, and economic diversification in Indian agricultural economy. Tamil Nadu, given its agricultural diversity and favorable policy environment, has emerged as a state of prime importance to spread the ventures. Yet, even with growing institutional attention, the ecosystem is plagued by persistent challenges that prevent the scalability and sustainability of Agri-startups. This research fills an important knowledge gap by examining the demographic, infrastructural, financial, and technological barriers to the development of Agri-startup founders in rural, semi-urban, and urban settings. Statistical instruments such as chi-square tests, ANOVA, weighted average ranking, and exploratory factor analysis were utilized to discover patterns and measure severity levels across demographic segments. The results shows that age and education determine the experience of challenges such that younger entrepreneurs experience more challenges in terms of technological adoption. Moreover, rural startups experience more challenges with internet connectivity, logistics, and fewer institutional network to access. Some of the key challenges identified are the absence of technological know-how, inadequate financial services, limited infrastructure, inadequate access to real-time market data, and erratic weather conditions. Through factor analysis, these problems were categorized into six broad categories: and financial constraints, technological barriers, issues of access infrastructure shortage, and environmental uncertainty. The study emphasizes that improving startups resilience requires a multifaceted approach that includes target financial support, digital inclusion initiatives, agribusiness incubation, training programs, and strong co-operative networks. Significant statistical associations were found between demographic factors and specific startup challenges, highlighting the need for differentiated policy interventions based on age, education, and geographic location. The study concludes that empowering Agri-startups with context-sensitive support systems can foster innovation, strengthen rural economies and contribute to sustainable agricultural development.
