Advancing molecular residual disease detection in cervical cancer through next‐generation sequencing of circulating human papillomavirus DNA
Bønløkke et al. demonstrated the prognostic significance of detectable circulating cell‐free human papillomavirus DNA (ccfHPV DNA) in 141 patients with cervical cancer using an ultrasensitive, tumor tissue‐agnostic next‐generation sequencing (NGS)‐based assay. Further prospective study is needed to determine the optimal sampling time point and threshold and to establish the clinical validity and utility of NGS‐based ccfHPV DNA detection in improving risk stratification beyond clinical factors, and for post‐treatment surveillance beyond clinical examination and imaging.
