Photochromism and Photoinduced Radical Activity─Symbiotic or Concurrent? A Case Study on Polymorphs of 1,4-Bis(imidazolyl)benzene Solvates
Two polymorphs of the OMe-BDPI-DMF solvates were obtained by tuning the crystallization conditions. The needle-shaped polymorph exhibits photochromism, while the prism-shaped form remains nonphotochromic; both, however, generate radicals upon photoirradiation. Structural analyses reveal that subtle variations in intermolecular interactions underpin and interconnect these distinct photophysical behaviors.
