Interfacial Assembly and Patterning of Responsive Tetragonal Photonic Crystals
Photonic structures play an increasingly important role in the development of optical materials because of their widely tunable structural colors and optical stability. However, further processing of photonic crystals into devices requires additional efforts to pattern these optical materials into designated symmetries and miniature structures. This work reports <i>in situ</i>, template-mediated assembly and patterning of active photonic structures with arbitrary structures and symmetries. Our theoretical modeling demonstrates that polymer templates containing magnetic nanorod solutions locally modulate the magnetic field distribution in the presence of an external magnetic field, leading to significantly enhanced field strength in surface gaps. Such localized field enhancement at the liquid-solid interface is defined by the template symmetry and geometry, which concentrate magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanorods and then serve as nucleation sites for the <i>in situ</i> growth of photonic crystals. As a result, photonic structures assembled only locally into patterns defined by the templates with high structural selectivity. The shape anisotropy of the Fe3O4@SiO2 nanorods further allows us to reversibly tune the crystal orientation and structural colors, leading to photonic patterns exhibiting different colors across the visible spectrum. This template-mediated assembly and patterning approach provides an effective way to fabricate responsive photonic materials and devices with designer structures and active optical responses to external stimuli.
