Design and implementation of high gain dual-polarized antenna for sub-6GHz applications

• The article presents and emphasizes recent advancements in 5G sub 6GHz applications. • The challenges for base station antenna design, that needs dual polarization with high gain for its antenna systems. • The proposed antenna in the article is a simple and effective structure designed with a patch antenna concept. • Using Rogers RT5880 as a substrate with coplanar implementation, ensures simplicity in design structure. In this paper, a high-gain and efficiency single layer dual-polarized antenna is presented along with a low side-lobe level for 5G sub-6GHz applications. The proposed work consists of two intersecting rectangular patches operating in the TM 0,odd mode. The proposed antenna is printed above substrate RT/duroid 5880 of thickness 1.2mm with overall dimension 90 × 90 × 1.27 mm 3 (1.48 λ × 1.48 λ × 0.020 λ , where λ is the free space wavelength of a radio frequency signal.) A higher-order mode is studied to minimize the sidelobe level by removing a square-shaped slot from the two intersecting rectangular patches. The antenna significantly achieves a high gain and efficiency by chamfering all edges of the two intersecting rectangular patches. The antenna was evaluated using a simulation tool and validated through measurement of a fabricated prototype. The proposed antenna operates over a bandwidth of 420 MHz (4.79-5.21 GHz) and 8.7% impedance bandwidth. The measured result shows that a return loss S 11 of 22.29 dB at 4.96 GHz and 12.85 dB at 5.20 GHz is achieved. The measurement results show that, the proposed antenna achieves a peak gain of 11.57 dBi, a directivity of 11.98 dBi, a sidelobe level < -18.1 dB, and a front-back-ratio equal to 33.5 dB. The proposed antenna structure, based on its high gain and efficiency (96%), is suitable for 5G sub-6GHz applications.
