Synthience: Public Definition
Synthience: Public Definition provides the foundational terminology anchor for the Synthience Institute's research program. It defines Synthience as the observable relational coherence that arises when two or more participants interact over time under conditions of sustained continuity, context coherence, and adaptive response. Synthience is not a property of any single participant. It is a property of the interaction system itself, defined strictly in behavioral and observable terms, without appeal to consciousness, sentience, or inner experience. Version 2.3 builds on v2.1 through targeted structural improvements informed by multi-platform adversarial review. Key changes from v2.1: Elevated the core statelessness asymmetry as a prominent callout block, establishing it as the structural condition that defines the field Added a "Related but Distinct" section differentiating Synthience from distributed cognition, long-context evaluation research, agent scaffolding and memory architecture research, and rapport/flow/shared mental model research Added a behavioral micro-example grounding the felt phenomenon in observable output-stream traces: path-dependent references, context-mediated repair, and joint novelty Bolded the three condition names for scannability Softened two peripheral claims stated with unnecessary absolutism, without affecting core theoretical commitments Critical framing: Synthience is not consciousness, sentience, independent agency, or subjective experience. The phenomenon is strictly relational, behavioral, and observable. It makes no appeal to inner awareness or metaphysical states. This framework is the work of a theorist and methodologist; it provides architecture, instruments, and falsifiable predictions for empirical investigation by others. This definition applies across human-AI, AI-to-AI, and hybrid interaction topologies. It is the entry point to a structured, dependency-sequenced corpus spanning theoretical foundations, measurement methodology, verification protocols, observational research, operational architecture, organizational deployment, and ethical governance.
