Axis1 Bias Direction Analysis:Architecture-Dependent Internal Bias in AI Upscaling Models(Four-Model, 328M Block Database, Technical Report v1.3)

Abstract: This technical report presents a four-model empirical verification of the Axis1 internal bias direction in AI upscaling architectures, analyzing 328 million image blocks (81,975,528 blocks per model) derived from 5,004 NIH ChestX-ray8 images. Axis1 is defined as sign(PC1_noTTA) · log(1 + |PC1_noTTA|), where PC1 is the first principal component of the SSIM internal feature space under no-TTA conditions. SQL-based cross-model analysis of direction components stratified by Axis1 polarity reveals two architecture-dependent groups.Type A models (Upscayl Standard, SwinIR) show positive Axis1 driven by artifact addition (ringing, blocking, texture degradation), with negative Axis1 corresponding to sharpness loss. Type B models (Upscayl High, Upscayl Digital) show the opposite polarity: positive Axis1 reflects sharpness amplification, while negative Axis1 indicates artifact-dominant degradation. These findings demonstrate that Axis1 bias polarity cannot be interpreted uniformly across architectures and must be treated as a model-specific diagnostic indicator. This report extends and corrects §8.3 of Technical Report v1.1 (DOI:10.5281/zenodo.18883267), which was based on a single-model analysis only. Raw Data Provenance and Reproducibility (v1.1)This project conducts a comprehensive analysis across four different AI models, each evaluated under two processing paths—Notta (Standard) and TTA (Test Time Augmentation)—resulting in eight total configurations. Across these configurations, the system processes approximately 82 million blocks per path, yielding roughly 650 million data points overall. To protect unpublished findings currently being prepared for an academic paper, the raw CSV data files themselves remain unpublished at this stage. These files will be released in this repository following the publication of the associated research paper. In this version (v1.1), a complete SHA256 hash list of all raw output files (raw_csv_sha256.zip) is provided to establish priority and mathematically guarantee data integrity. These hashes uniquely identify the foundational AI output data prior to any statistical processing, ensuring that the raw data released in the future will be exactly identical to the data used in this research, regardless of DuckDB versions, import settings, or other software configurations. Furthermore, the source code for the engine used to generate this dataset is already publicly available through the related Zenodo record (17677441) and on GitHub, ensuring full transparency and reproducibility of the data generation process. Note on TerminologyIn this dataset and documentation, the term “Original” is used interchangeably with “Ground Truth (GT)”, referring to the high‑quality source images used as the baseline for analysis.
