Pacific home children

Audio recording and transcript of Syd Baker's presentation in 2002 to the Nanaimo Historical Society in which he talks about British Home Children. Baker outlines his own experience as a child growing up in Dr. Barnardo's Homes, where he lived from the age of two years old. He also gives biographical information about founder Dr. Thomas Barnardo, and gives details about how Barnardo's programs for orphaned and destitute children in Britain started and developed. Baker goes on to explain how 100,000 children from Barnardo's Homes and other similar programs were sent to Canada between 1869-1939. He details their experience and shares several children's stories. Although he didn't move to Canada until he was an adult, Baker is familiar with the Pacific home child experience due to his volunteer work with organizations dedicated to helping former home children research their backgrounds.
