Analysis of Transonic Buffet by DifferentNumerical Approaches
Transonic flows around supercritical airfoils feature a supersonic region on the suction side of the airfoil, ending in a transonic shock front. Under specific conditions of angle of attack and Mach number, this shock wave undergoes self-sustained low-frequency oscillations, known as buffet. Buffet can endanger the structural integrity of the wing, thus setting a limit to the flight envelope. Despite its importance, the phenomenon is not fully understood. In this work, numerical investigations of the transonic OAT15a profile are performed. Therefore three different simulation codes for turbulence resolving simulations are used and compared to each other.
