A Virtual Reality based educational package in dialysis for patients and healthcare professionals

End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in children is rare, with approximately 40–50 children in the UK commencing dialysis each year. As a result, opportunities for practical education and training for families and healthcare professionals are limited, with many centres relying on one or two specialist nurses to deliver all patient and caregiver training. Families must also make complex decisions regarding treatment pathways, including Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) or Haemodialysis (HD), and whether dialysis is delivered in hospital or at home. This paper explores the potential of immersive virtual reality (VR) training environments to support patient education, enhance clinical training, and improve understanding of dialysis procedures and treatment choices.
