Micro-Spaces of Pause: Toward Care as an Attentive Experience

Conceptual essay on attentional infrastructure in healthcare environments, exploring the notion of reflective pause and relational distance in care experience. AbstractHealthcare environments place continuous attentional demands on patients, relatives and professionals. Although programs aimed at the humanization of care have introduced a wide range of clinical, educational, and recreational initiatives, the perceptual conditions through which care is experienced remain largely unexplored. The quality of experience depends not only on the content provided, but also on the attentional state in which it is encountered. This paper argues that contemporary hospitals lack an infrastructure capable of modulating these attentional conditions. Drawing on neuro-perceptual and phenomenological perspectives, the essay identifies two forms of pause: recreational pauses, which redirect attention elsewhere, and restorative pauses, which reduce its physiological activation. The “reflective pause” is introduced as a temporary reorganization of attention that allows care to be experienced at a tolerable relational distance. A micro-infrastructure of attention is proposed: small spatial and cultural configurations embedded in healthcare environments designed to modulate the perceptual conditions of experience rather than convey content or produce direct therapeutic outcomes. Emerging from an artistic practice in rehabilitation contexts, it suggests an interface between artistic research and clinical research. Keywords: attention; attentive care; relational distance; reflective pause; arts in health; medical humanities; perceptual design.
