BORN, MADE & RECOGNISED: RETHINKING HOMOSEXUALITY
This paper provides a multidisciplinary examination of homosexuality through historical, legal, scientific, cultural, and religious perspectives. It interrogates the long-standing debate on whether homosexuality should be understood as a biologically inherent orientation, a socially constructed identity, or a product of both biological and environmental influences. Drawing from historical records of ancient civilisations, religious doctrines, scientific studies, and sociological discourse, the study traces the evolution of attitudes toward homosexuality across different societies and time periods. Particular attention is given to the African context, with a focused analysis of Ghana’s contemporary legal and cultural debates, including the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. By situating the issue within global and historical frameworks, the paper seeks to provide a balanced and critical understanding of how sexuality has been interpreted, regulated, and contested across cultures.
