Representación Distorsionada y la Interacción de la Vida: El Caso de Falling into Your Smile
In the age of worldwide connectivity, the power of representation on any screen size is so strong that it influences thoughts, decisions, and actions. In many circumstances, it has been seen that a high-quality depiction can bring social groupings together through a sense of inclusion and a desire to explore the Other with respect. Yet misrepresentation can equally generate division and conflict. This study utilized the Chinese drama Falling into Your Smile (2021) as a case study of how eSports culture is portrayed and contested across audiences. Drawing on critical posthumanism, due to the open framework for interconnection of all life forms, and its ethical implications on life-balance decisions, along with Stuart Hall’s representation theory and Karen Barad’s concept o intra-actions, the study argues that media do not simply reflect culture but actively shape it. A qualitative interpretive approach was employed, analyzing selected episodes alongside 75 purposefully sampled discussions from Reddit, Douban, and other platforms through thematic content analysis. Findings reveal recurrent tensions such as nationalist stereotyping of Korean players, gendered portrayals of female empowerment, unethical depictions of professional practice, and toxic fan behaviors. Domestic audiences strongly resisted these elements, while many international viewers embraced the romance-driven narrative, illustrating what Jack Mezirow terms as transformative ‘distorted’ learning.
