Enhanced Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites Reinforced With Mg 67 –Ti 33 and Mg 67 –Ti 32 – <scp> SWCNTs 1 </scp>

ABSTRACT The main focus of this work is to develop Mg 67 –Ti 33 and Mg 67 –Ti 32 –SWCNTs 1 reinforced epoxy nanocomposites (NCs) and to study the effects of varying content (0.5–2 wt%) of these nanofillers on the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy NCs. Binary (Mg 67 –Ti 33 ) and ternary (Mg 67 –Ti 32 –SWCNTs 1 ) nano materials were prepared using high‐energy mechanical alloying. The NCs with varying filler content were prepared using the solution casting method. The nanoparticles were dispersed in the matrix using a combination of probe and bath sonication. The incorporation of nanoparticles resulted in a substantial improvement in mechanical and thermal properties. An improvement of up to 142%, 115%, and 88% in tensile strength (TS), flexural strength (FS), and impact strength, respectively, was observed in Mg 67 –Ti 33 reinforced composites, whereas Mg 67 –Ti 32 –SWCNTs 1 loaded NCs showed an increase in TS, FS, and impact strength up to 188%, 144%, and 148%, respectively. However, a decline in TS, FS, and impact strength was observed at higher filler content (2 wt%). An improved thermal stability and higher Tg were observed in NCs. SEM micrographs exhibited rougher and irregular fracture surfaces of NCs, demonstrating enhanced filler–matrix interfacial bonding, which contributed to the improved load transfer and resistance to crack propagation.
