A Highly Stable Zinc‐Mimosinate Metal–Organic Framework for Controlled Agrochemical Delivery

Agrochemicals can effectively manage pests, diseases, and weeds, significantly enhancing farmers’ crop yields. However, to maximize economic gains, agrochemicals are frequently overused, leading to excessive and uncontrolled application, causing environmental pollution. In our way to shift toward sustainable development, we have selected the natural origin growth regulator L ‐mimosine as herbicide and the widely used micronutrient and antibacterial Zn 2+ for the preparation of an agrochemical‐based metal–organic framework‐MOF (or AgroMOF). Particularly, we have prepared the novel GR‐MOF‐25 with a structure built up from 1D chains of [ZnO 5 N] distorted octahedra surrounded by four different mimosinate ligands, creating chains bonded by the linkers along the a axis, and creating a layered structure. Interestingly, the stability studies demonstrated that the herbicide is released in a slow manner in tap water and phosphate buffer aqueous solution, with 7.4 ± 0.1% and 37.4 ± 4.3% of leaching after 8 d, respectively. Considering the potential of AgroMOFs as safe agrochemicals, the leaching of GR‐MOF‐25 components was studied in soil, reveling a sustained and cumulative release of H 2 MI of 0.9 ± 0.2% from GR‐MOF‐25 after 7 days. These results demonstrate the preparation of a safe AgroMOF with a slow release of the active ingredients, opening new ways for the safe application of agrochemicals.
