Therapeutic Potential of BODIPY‐Based Lignin Nanosensitizers as Sustainable ROS Generators

ABSTRACT The sustained demand for advanced antimicrobial agents highlights lignin as a renewable and environmentally friendly biopolymer. Sustainable biopolymer lignin (agri‐waste‐based) derived nanostructures were developed to achieve water solubility of photosensitizers. For that, we have prepared a series of electron‐withdrawing haloaryl/halonitroaryl substituted BODIPY as photosensitizer probes. Subsequently, lignin was isolated from areca nut waste (leaf sheath) using the autoclave method. BODIPY‐based nanosensitizers have demonstrated significantly better in vitro photophysical properties than their native counterparts. The developed photonanosensitizers were successfully used in pathogen inhibition due to their efficient singlet oxygen generation. The persistent demand for effective antimicrobial materials underscores the potential of lignin, a renewable biopolymer, when functionalized with BODIPY dyes, to serve as an efficient antimicrobial platform.
