The Evolution of the Unaccompanied Clarinet

This study explores the evolution of the unaccompanied clarinet through the lens of extended techniques, focusing on five representative works spanning from the mid-twentieth century to the present: Olivier Messiaen’s Abîme des oiseaux (1941), Giacinto Scelsi’s Preghiera per un’ombra (1954), Michael Jarrell’s Assonance (1983), Eric Mandat’s Etude for Barney (1990), and Jörg Widmann’s Fantasie (1993). Each of these compositions redefines the expressive and technical boundaries of the clarinet while reflecting broader aesthetic shifts in modern and contemporary music. By integrating historical research, score analysis, and practice-based performance insight, this thesis traces the clarinet’s transformation from a lyrical, melodic instrument into an expressive vehicle capable of embodying color, gesture, and philosophical depth. It argues that extended techniques have not only expanded the instrument’s vocabulary but have also reshaped the clarinet’s identity, transforming it into a medium through which composers and performers alike engage with the modernist search for new sound and meaning. Ultimately, the dissertation argues that the evolution of extended techniques represents not merely an expansion of the clarinet’s technical vocabulary but a redefinition of its expressive and cultural identity. Through these works, the clarinet emerges as a site of inquiry into the nature of sound itself, an instrument through which composers and performers engage with questions of perception, corporeality, and transcendence in the modern era. The research thus contributes to demonstrating how the music for the unaccompanied clarinet has evolved and to illuminate the clarinet’s central role in the ongoing search for new sound and meaning within contemporary classical music.
