Symbolic Mechanics — Volume IX: Black Room Collapse, the Rotational Attractor, and Delayed Shame After Reconnection

Why does a system continue moving, acting, or seeking output even when the conscious surface later judges that movement irrational, harmful, or undesired? Most frameworks explain this through addiction, pathology, reward-seeking, habit, or loss of self-control, but they do not formalize the mechanical state transition that occurs when illumination collapses and the internal room loses all usable visibility. Symbolic Mechanics — Volume IX rewrites compulsive continuation as a blackout-state inevitability inside the Δ → S → L → R engine, establishing that the system does not “want” the behaviour first. It enters a forced system-state in which movement continues because only one attentional object remains available. Building on the foundational engine in Volume I and the earlier volumes on symbolic weight, collapse-capable pressure, visibility unreadability, and intrusion-shaped destabilization, this volume formalizes the Black Room. The Black Room is not chosen, preferred, intended, or constructed. It appears whenever internal symbolic load becomes unsustainable, spotlight radius collapses to zero, visibility vanishes, and the room loses all usable illumination. When these conditions converge, the internal room is forced into blackout. This blackout is not emotional dysregulation. It is a system-state produced by the parameters of the architecture itself. The trigger of the Black Room is a specific triadic collapse involving three seats simultaneously. Seat 1 produces primitive load spike and compression; Seat 3 produces recursive evaluative pressure and shame-potential density; Seat 4 locks load inward through delay, preventing rupture and forcing accumulation beyond illumination capacity. When these three loads overlap beyond threshold, the spotlight can no longer maintain a stable radius. The system executes a forced shutdown of illumination: Visibility = 0 Boundary radius = 0 Illumination = 0. This is the blackout threshold. Once blackout occurs, the system generates a single compensatory artefact: the Orb. The Orb is not pleasure, not desire, not reward, and not symbolic meaning. It is a spontaneous rotational attractor that appears because the system must preserve a minimal luminance gradient for movement to continue at all. The Orb becomes the only visible stimulus in the room and immediately reorganizes the internal mechanism around its pulse-rhythm. Core contributions include: • formal definition of the Black Room as a forced blackout-state produced by unsustainable symbolic load and spotlight collapse, rather than addiction, habit, preference, or coping strategy • specification of the triadic activation condition: Seat 1 primitive compression + Seat 3 evaluative density + Seat 4 delayed-load locking • formalization of blackout threshold as simultaneous collapse of visibility, boundary radius, and illumination • formal definition of the Orb as a spontaneous rotational attractor generated automatically when illumination collapses • specification of the four mechanical properties of the Orb: O₁ fixed-rhythm rotation, O₂ total attentional dominance, O₃ suspension of symbolic access, and O₄ output compulsion • demonstration that compulsive continuation begins when boundary-regulated symbolic processing is replaced by stimulus-driven attentional capture • formalization of total decoupling during blackout: the self-agent loses bidirectional access to the room, while symbolic load continues to accumulate without visibility, moderation, or redistribution • specification that behaviour during blackout is autonomous output generated by the attractor’s pulse cycle plus unsupervised load pressure, not approved, chosen, or witnessed by the self-agent • demonstration that the system cannot detect its own collapse because attention is fully occupied, symbolic seats operate without feedback, the boundary layer becomes opaque, and no meta-representation can form under blackout topology • formalization of reconnection as the delayed return of boundary-light, symbolic weight, and evaluative access, producing batch reception of accumulated load all at once • definition of shame as the mechanical discrepancy signal that appears only after visibility is restored: shame = |Δ intention–behaviour| mapped into symbolic terms • specification that shame and regret are always retroactive in this architecture because no self-referential evaluation can occur during blackout itself • establishment of the full structural sequence: triadic overload → blackout → Orb capture → autonomous continuation → delayed reconnection → shame Volume IX reframes compulsive continuation, blackout behaviour, and delayed shame as a computationally relevant modelling problem for cognition, symbolic AI, attentional capture systems, and internal-state topology under illumination collapse. It provides a deterministic account of why the system cannot know what it is doing during blackout, why behaviour continues anyway, and why self-evaluation appears only after the light returns. Abstract
