A más de 100 años, y aun no derrotada: ácido acetilsalicílico. Su historia y recomendaciones actuales
Acetyl-salicylic acid, one of the most widely used drugs in cardiovascular medicine, was synthesized in 1897 by the German pharmaceutical chemist Felix Hoffman. Its history is not exempted of difficulties and fortuitous events. What is remarkable is how a medicine created in the past to fulfill an anti-inflammatory effect, became one of the cornerstone drugs in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the last 50 years. In view of the latest evidence that has reduced its indication in primary cardiovascular prevention, and the debate between the benefit and risk of its use, we consider useful to provide update data to clinicians about its prescription according to each patient's profile.
