A Hybrid Emergency Power Supply Solution with Parallel Dual-Winding Induction Generator and Energy Storage
Background: With the global surge in power demand, critical facilities demand high power supply stability and reliability. Traditional emergency power sources have drawbacks such as slow startup, high noise, and significant pollution, while standalone energy storage systems lack sufficient capacity due to limitations in battery technology. Neither meets complex emergency needs; thus, designing efficient, stable emergency power systems is practically critical. Objective: To develop a novel emergency power system integrating a dual-winding induction generator (DWIG) with energy storage to enhance response speed, stability, and adaptability. Method: The system adopts a parallel topology of DWIG and energy storage, supporting generator- only, storage-only, and hybrid modes. A coordinated voltage and power control strategy is designed and validated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations. Results: Simulations show that the system achieves fast response, stable output, and efficient power regulation under both grid-connected and islanded conditions. The hybrid mode compensates for generator startup delay and storage limitations, ensuring balanced power allocation and high power quality. Conclusion: The DWIG-storage hybrid system offers significant advantages in reliability, efficiency, and flexibility, making it a feasible and promising solution for emergency power supply in critical facilities.
