Leveraging lifestyle interventions to enhance clinical outcomes and mitigate disease progression in bipolar disorder I: A narrative review
Bipolar Disorder I (BD-I) is a chronic mental health condition characterised by extreme mood swings, including manic and depressive episodes, that can significantly impact a patients’ quality of life and functional capacity. While traditional pharmacotherapy remains the cornerstone of BD-I treatment, there is emerging evidence suggesting that lifestyle interventions can play a crucial role in enhancing clinical outcomes and slow down the progression of the disorder. The present paper discusses the potential benefits of incorporating lifestyle changes in the treatment regimen of BD-I patients, particularly in physical health, diet, exercise, circadian rhythm regulation, sleep hygiene, and social support. Regular physical activity reduces mood episodes and their frequency, while a balanced diet can take care of the comorbid metabolic issues generally seen in patients with BD-I. Sleep disturbances are critical, triggering mood episodes. This review synthesises the findings of these recent studies, which indicate that a holistic approach, which includes lifestyle intervention, will be in place with pharmacological treatment. This integrated approach not only deals with the complex nature pertaining to BD-I but also ensures that the patient plays an active role in the management of the condition, thereby ensuring maximised long-term outcomes.
