Alternatives to antimicrobials to counter multidrug-resistance
The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria poses a major global challenge to both human and veterinary medicine. Conventional antibiotics are increasingly ineffective, prompting the urgent need for novel, sustainable, and targeted alternatives. In this study, bacteriophages, antimicrobial peptide (Pep-2), and Corilagin (phytochemical) were evaluated for antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. Potentially novel bacteriophages were isolated in this study that demonstrated lytic activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vitro and in biological specimens. Additionally, Pep-2 and Corilagin also demonstrated inhibitory activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens such as MRSA and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP).
