Design Proposal for a Multidimensional Approach to Integrating Developmental Disabled and Non-Disabled Environments : Focused on the Work ‘Body Jari III’
Purpose: This study aims to apply a multidimensional approach between disability and design to build an inclusive environment for people with and without developmental disabilities, and to study its potential. Method: By analyzing design cases using the multidimensional approach framework presented through previous research, we were able to explore various design implementation methods and determine the effectiveness of design for integrating developmental disabled and non-disabled environments. The design proposal began with redefining the function of objects through subversive thinking, based on the judgment that the current design for the disabled has been developed in a social situation where it has been stereotyped. Starting from the reflection that design for the disabled is a prerequisite for intervention to be harmonized into the standards environment of the non-disabled, we proposed new functions and forms that comfort and empathize with the disabled. Result: The proposed design neutralizes the stereotyped visual while providing comfort to people with disabilities and allowing them to express themselves. It will support the disabled as independent individuals in society and enjoy life. The multidimensional approach to disability and design offers a significant conceptual shift in the construction of an inclusive environment and demonstrates its potential for expansion by suggesting various application methods.
