Contested Seats: Knoll in Iran
Abstract Drawing on archival documents, memoirs, interviews, oral histories, and business correspondences, this article explores the operations of Knoll International’s Iranian licensee, Tazin Knoll, from 1967 to 1977. The study focuses on the management and operational tactics of this Iran-based branch, shedding light on the broader ramifications of Knoll’s global footprint. It further shows how Knoll furnishings, embedded in elite state and corporate interiors, shaped a distinct material culture among Iran’s ruling class. Illuminating the complex interplay between global objectives and local realities, this article ultimately contributes to our understanding of Knoll’s role as a multinational company in shaping design preferences in developing countries.
