Exploring the link between democratisation and citizenship: comparing Kosovo and Albania
The paper thus focuses on the impact of democratic upswings and downswings on citizenship. More specifically, it examines citizenship constellations in Kosovo and Albania as a means of exploring the way in which these citizenship regimes evolved in conjunction with uneven democratic development and migration trends in these two different political contexts. The paper analyses political developments and citizenship changes in these two countries and their impact on the rights of minorities and diaspora. A particular emphasises will be placed on the impact of EU conditionality as well as contestations of citizenship in view of different developments of democracy after the fall of communism.
