INTEGRATING RESEARCH AND INNOVATION TO ENHANCE NIGERIA'S DEFENSE INDUSTRIAL SELF-RELIANCE

Nigeria’s aspiration to establish a viable and self-sustaining Military-Industrial Complex (MIC) is critical to its national security and defense autonomy. Central to this ambition is the role of research and development (R&D) in driving innovation, enhancing indigenous production, and fostering strategic self-reliance. The creation of the Defense Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) marks a significant step toward institutionalizing R&D efforts aimed at addressing the specific operational and logistical needs of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). By forging collaborative linkages with local industries, academia, and international partners, the DRDB serves as a strategic platform for developing homegrown defense technologies and systems. This paper examines the strategic importance of harnessing R&D synergies in building a sustainable MIC in Nigeria. It highlights the critical need for policy coherence, funding consistency, capacity development, and the commercialization of defense technologies. It also explores the challenges limiting Nigeria’s MIC growth, including fragmented institutional frameworks, limited technical expertise, weak infrastructure, and inadequate investment in defense innovation. Drawing from global best practices, the study proposes a framework for integrating defense R&D into a broader national innovation ecosystem, ensuring alignment with Nigeria’s security priorities and economic development goals. The paper argues that a well-coordinated and innovation-driven MIC will not only reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign military imports but also position the country as a significant contributor to regional and global defense solutions. Ultimately, strengthening Nigeria’s defense capabilities through sustained R&D collaboration can enhance national security, stimulate industrial growth, and affirm Nigeria’s sovereignty in the evolving global defense landscape.
