Recent advances in equine wound management. Part 1: introduction

Equine wounds present an ongoing challenge for clinicians. Successful wound management aims to achieve rapid functional recovery alongside an optimal cosmetic outcome. A clear understanding of the stages of wound healing is essential to inform appropriate treatment decisions. Debridement and lavage remain fundamental components of traditional woundcare, while hydrosurgical techniques may reduce debridement time, particularly in severely contaminated wounds. Where feasible, primary closure remains the preferred approach to facilitate efficient tissue repair. Wound dressing selection should be guided by the stage of healing to optimise the wound environment. This article reviews the phases of equine wound healing, outlines established management principles and highlights recent advances in the field.
