MGTOW and the Masculine Crisis: Digital Separatism, Hegemonic Masculinity, and the Manosphere in the 21st Century

The Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) movement constitutes one of the most studied yet poorly understood nodes of the contemporary manosphere—a fragmented constellation of online masculinist communities united by anti-feminist sentiment and reactive constructions of gender identity. This paper undertakes a systematic socio-theoretical examination of MGTOW, situating the movement within the broader frameworks of hegemonic masculinity (Connell, 1995; Connell & Messerschmidt, 2005), Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic capital, and Eva Illouz’s sociological analysis of emotional capitalism. Drawing on extant empirical research, digital ethnography, and discourse analysis, we interrogate how MGTOW constructs masculine identity in digital spaces, how it relates to the “crisis of masculinity” thesis, and what trajectories its ideology traces toward radicalization. Our analysis reveals that MGTOW operates as a reactive masculinity formation—a defensive ideological space in which legitimate male anxieties surrounding socioeconomic precarity, emotional isolation, and institutional distrust are colonized by misogynistic, anti-feminist, and increasingly extremist discourses. We conclude by discussing implications for critical masculinity studies, digital sociology, and gender-based violence prevention.
