Topology of a Solid-State Superconducting Axial Flux Motor via Self-Excited Cascaded Magnetocaloric Cryocooling
High-temperature superconducting (HTS) motors promise zero DC resistance (R = 0), but their application is heavily constrained by the mass and complexity of cryogenic liquid cooling systems (e.g., liquid nitrogen/helium pumps). Building upon our previously proposed AF-MCE architecture, this paper introduces a V3.0 paradigm: a self-excited, solid-state superconducting motor topology. By engineering a spatially cascaded magnetocaloric stator disk—utilizing ErCo2 for deep-cryogenic heat extraction and La-Fe-Si for ambient heat rejection—this architecture leverages the motor’s in trinsic alternating magnetic field to maintain HTS coils (e.g., YBCO) below their critical temperature Tc = 77 K without any fluid cryogens.
