Carbon module: An open-source python package for global forest carbon accounting

The Carbon Module is an open-source Python package that quantifies carbon stocks and stock changes in forest biomass and harvested wood products (HWP) for 180 countries from 1990 to 2100. Built on official statistics of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and simulation results from the Timber market Model for policy-Based Analysis (TiMBA), it provides transparent, reproducible, and policy-relevant estimates on forestry-related carbon stocks in line with guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The modular architecture integrates databases, pre-processing, calculation, and visualization. The integrated dashboard allows users to interactively visualize and explore quantified carbon stock and stock changes, thereby increasing the transparency and easing communication of results. In combination with TiMBA, an open-source forest sector model, the module enables scenario-based long-term assessments of forest-sector mitigation pathways. The Carbon Module supports both research and policy by facilitating evidence-based evaluations of forest-related contributions to climate change mitigation.
