Ward-based primary health care outreach teams in South Africa: coverage, training, skills, and competencies
he South African National Department of Health (NDoH) established Ward-Based Primary Health care Outreach Teams (WBPHCOTs) in 2011 as part of the reengineering of Primary Health Care (PHC) in the country. The WBPHCOT policy framework is a critical vehicle aimed at improving access to basic healthcare through community-based outreach. The policy promotes preventive care, bridges the gap between communities and clinics through CHWs (SA NDoH, 2011).
