Inaugural editorial for Discover Green Chemistry
It is a pleasure to introduce Discover Green Chemistry, a fully open access journal in the Discover series, dedicated to research that makes chemistry safer, cleaner, and more resource-efficient.Green chemistry is no longer a niche theme; it is increasingly the baseline expectation for how we design molecules, materials, and processes. The discipline grew from early warnings about unintended consequences of chemical use, such as those brought into public focus by Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring" published in 1962 [1].It was later shaped into a practical framework by Paul Anastas and John Warner through the "Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry" [2].Over the past decades, the field has moved from ideas to tools that academia and industry can apply which resulted in safer reagents and solvents, safer working environments, reduced emissions, effective catalysis, renewable feedstocks, circular strategies for chemicals and materials, access to clean energy and water and global climate change mitigation [3].In parallel with advances in reagents and process design, green chemistry is increasingly embracing predictive and quantitative approaches that allow sustainability to be embedded at earlier stages of research and development.By drawing on modelling tools and thermodynamic insight, green chemistry can guide the selection of safer solvents, including emerging classes such as deep eutectic systems, and inform the rational design of catalytic and reaction pathways before extensive experimental screening [4].Computer-aided process design frameworks integrate environmental metrics such as E-factor and energy consumption into synthetic planning, allowing route optimization with reduced waste and improved efficiency. In parallel, in silico toxicology, QSAR modeling, and machine learning approaches facilitate early-stage screening of hazards and exposure risks, aligning chemical innovation with regulatory and societal expectations.Together, these approaches support a shift from reactive mitigation toward more predictive and design-oriented strategies for sustainability.Discover Green Chemistry is a home for green chemistry research and a meeting point for science, industry, policy, and society. The journal welcomes both breakthrough advances and well-validated incremental improvements acknowledging that each contribution plays a pivotal role in the sustainable progress of the field.
