Engineering MXene/metal composites from MAX phase/metal–Al precursors for high-performance energy conversion and storage

This work presents a scalable approach for synthesizing MXene/metal composites via direct etching of MAX phase/metal–Al alloy precursor materials. By combining Ti3AlC2 MAX phase with Ni–Al, Cu–Al, and Ni–Cu–Al alloys and optimizing sintering and etching conditions, the authors demonstrate the formation of three-dimensional porous MXene/metal architectures with enhanced electrochemical performance. The composites exhibit high activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction and improved areal capacitance, highlighting their potential for energy conversion and storage applications.
