FishTank.jl: A model-driven approach to gamified scientific modeling and visualization in Julia

This paper introduces FishTank.jl, a simulation game developed to support the teaching of scientific computing using the Julia programming language. The core mechanics are based on agent-based modeling of a single fish interacting with its environment through movement and hunger dynamics. By visualizing the evolution of internal states such as hunger level in a dynamic and parameter-controlled simulation, FishTank.jl offers an intuitive platform for understanding concepts such as discrete-time simulation and behavior modeling. Implemented entirely in Julia and rendered using Plotly libraries, the system is lightweight and easily reproducible in standard computing environments. The paper presents the overall architecture, key features, and examples of how the simulation can be used pedagogically to enhance understanding of computational modeling.
