Women in Socialist Societies: Gender Equality, Economic Systems, and Global Realities
This paper critically examines the intersection of socialism and gender, analyzing how socialist ideologies have shaped women’s roles and gender identities across various historical contexts, including the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and Eastern Bloc nations. While socialism advanced gender equity through state policies promoting education, childcare, and workforce participation, it often failed to dismantle deeply embedded patriarchal structures. Women continued to face the “double burden” of paid labor and unpaid domestic responsibilities, revealing a dissonance between socialist ideals and lived realities. Drawing on historical analysis and intersectional socialist feminist theory, the paper highlights the contradictions within socialist governance and explores how these legacies inform contemporary gender struggles. It argues that socialism offers both critical lessons and transformative possibilities for envisioning more just, equitable, and democratic futures in response to global crises and the inequities of capitalism.
