Exploring the challenges in the design and implementation of the medical curriculum and the potential solutions

ABSTRACT The medical curriculum is expected to be complex, considering the wide range of knowledge, skills, attitude, and other noncognitive attributes that an undergraduate student must acquire by the time they complete their course. The objective of the current review is to explore the challenges involved in the design and implementation of the medical curriculum and propose potential solutions for the same. An extensive search of all materials related to the topic was carried out on the PubMed and Google Scholar search engines. Relevant research articles focusing on the various challenges in the process of development and implementation of a medical curriculum published in the period 2006 to 2022 were included in the review. Overall, 36 research articles were selected based upon their suitability with the current review objectives as mentioned in the article and included. Keywords used in the search include medical curriculum in the title alone only A number of challenges have been identified in the medical curriculum that has significantly impacted the quality of medical graduate student we are producing. To conclude, even though multiple challenges have been identified, proper training of medical teachers and periodic evaluation of the curriculum are extremely essential to bridge the existing challenges and eventually strengthen the curriculum to bring about the desired changes in the produced medical graduates.
