This study analyzes the evolution and cultural importance of Cantonese opera in Macau, focusing on its historical development, socio-economic background, and current challenges. As one of the main manifestations of Chinese culture, Cantonese opera has taken root in Macau since the Ming Dynasty and has continuously developed with social changes. Research has shown that Cantonese opera is not only an art form, but also a key factor in identity recognition and cultural inheritance, especially during the War of Resistance Against Japan, Cantonese opera became a cultural medium that united the people. In terms of historical development, the origin of Cantonese opera can be traced back to the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, and gradually evolved into an important entertainment activity for the local Chinese community in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, many famous Cantonese opera performers sought refuge in Macau, making it a platform for expressing patriotic sentiments. With the passage of time, especially after the mid-20th century, Macau has undergone a process of modernization and urbanization, and Cantonese opera faces challenges from other forms of entertainment, but still maintains an active state in temple fairs, celebrations, and folk activities. The socio-economic environment has had a profound impact on the development of Cantonese opera. As a place where Chinese and Western cultures intersect, Macao's diverse cultural characteristics provide an opportunity for the popularization of Cantonese opera. With the prosperity of the tourism and gambling industries, although the audience for Cantonese opera has decreased, it still maintains a certain level of activity. In addition, the new generation's interest in traditional art forms is gradually decreasing, leading to an aging audience for Cantonese opera. The study also emphasized the crucial role of Cantonese opera in maintaining identity and cultural heritage. As a carrier of local residents' cultural memory, Cantonese opera showcases social changes and livelihood issues through performances. In the War of Resistance Against Japan, his patriotic performances inspired the morale of the people and strengthened their recognition of Chinese culture and identity. However, the current development of Cantonese opera faces many challenges, including a decrease in audience during the modernization process and a lack of educational resources. Although some cultural groups and schools have actively promoted Cantonese opera education, overall, the lack of systematic teaching plans and professional teachers makes it difficult for students to deeply understand this art form. Therefore, enhancing government support and resource investment in traditional culture is a key measure to promote the sustainable development of Cantonese opera. In summary, this study thoroughly explores the evolution and cultural significance of Cantonese opera in Macau from a regional historical perspective, and points out that with continuous efforts to protect and promote it, Cantonese opera is expected to inherit and develop in the new social environment.
