Oscillation Analysis of BJT and Op-Amp Based Colpitts Oscillator Circuit Designs

Colpitts oscillators are a type of oscillator that has a wide range of uses in electronic applications due to their frequency stability and efficiency in producing high-frequency sinusoidal waves. Its basic structure is an LC resonator consisting of a capacitance divider circuit and an inductor. This structure determines the oscillation frequency with a minimum of components and offers the opportunity to produce high-accuracy signals. Colpitts oscillators have applications in various areas such as signal processing, radio frequency communication and timing. In the studies conducted in the literature, Colpitts oscillator circuits and their types have been generally introduced, but there are no comparisons made with designs made with different element bases. In this study, two different designs of the Colpitts oscillator circuit, Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) and Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp) based, were analyzed. Circuit designs were made with the OrCAD/PSpice® simulation program, their simulations were performed and the simulation results were analyzed. 12V source voltage was applied to the circuit designs with BJT and Op-Amp and the output signals were examined for 100µs at an oscillation frequency of approximately 850kHz. In these signals, parameters such as the time for the oscillation to stabilize (settling band) and the distortion on the signals were compared. As a result, it was analyzed that the oscillation of the BJT-based Colpitts oscillator stabilized in a shorter time than the Op-Amp-based Colpitts oscillator and the amplitude fluctuations in the signal obtained from its output were less. This study guides the design choices according to the need by revealing the advantages and limitations of the Colpitts oscillator for different application design requirements.
