Simone Fattal: Charting a Territory to take Flight
Greek mythology and poetry, human knowledge, ancient Egypt, and Charles Baudelaire’s poetry all simmer to the surface of the carefully choreographed map that constitute the art and life of Syrian-born artist, Simone Fattal. In Fattal’s moral landscape, one is witness to works of art whose setting, much like all of Fattal’s scenes bristle with what Marina Warner argues to be art's eternal symbology, as well as its and restorative potential to produce voyages of receptive signification within the human imagination. Inherently, the artist’s topographies are consciously dislocated from immediate contemporaneity. Her references are pulled, pooled and re-codified from across myriad a cite of millennia for the spectator to view and parse. This project forms part of two decades' worth of engagement with Simone Fattal's life and work, which began with research on her publishing imprint, The Post-Apollo Press.
