Potential of calcined clay and nano CaCO3 containing cement in soil stabilization

<!--StartFragment--><!--EndFragment--> <p class="Abstract" style="text-indent:0cm"><span lang="EN-US">In the geotechnicalfield, Portland cement is frequently used as a chemical soil stabilizationmaterial. Considering the energy spent in the production of Portland cement andthe excess CO2 produced, it is vital to reduce cement consumption toincrease economic and ecological sustainability. Researchers are investigatingthe use of alternative materials with lower CO2 emissions andproduction costs compared to Portland cement in soil stabilizationapplications. This article investigates the effects of cement containing nanoCaCO3 and calcined clay on the stabilization of expansive soils. Inthis study, different cement mixtures were obtained by replacing limestonecalcined clay cement (LC3) with nano CaCO3. These stabilizer mixtures weremixed with the expansive soil sample at 4%, 6%, and 8% ratios and 10 mixtureswere obtained to be subjected to the experiments. To investigate the soilstabilization effects, the mixtures were subjected to Proctor tests afterdetermining the Atterberg limits. It was determined that the plasticity indexand maximum dry density increased, optimum moisture content decreased with theutilization of the stabilizer mixture containing calcined clay and nano CaCO3.<o:p></o:p></span>
