Toxicokinetic modelling of the transfer of non-dioxin like polychlorinated biphenyls from feed into edible tissues of pigs
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are environmentally persistent substances that can accumulate in the food chain. PCBs are often divided into dioxin-like (dl) and non-dioxin-like (ndl) PCBs based on their toxicological behavior. Although non-dioxin-like PCBs behave toxicologically differently to dioxins, they are also toxic to humans. Therefore, our exposure to them should be limited. Due to their high lipophilicity, our main route of exposure to them is the consumption of fatty animal products such as edible tissues from fattening pigs. The aim of this study was to characterize the transfer of the six indicator ndl-PCBs, which represent approximately 50% of total ndl-PCBs in feed and food, into fat and liver of fattening pigs.
