Characterization of the Timepix3-based camera for electron, ion, and photon spectroscopy applications at the SQS instrument at EuXFEL
Velocity Map Imaging (VMI) spectroscopy is a technique used to study the dynamics of atoms, molecules, and small nanoparticles. At the SQS instrument of the European X-ray Free Electron Laser, a VMI spectrometer is used in combination with microchannel plates (MCP) Phosphor stacks and a Timepix3-based camera that allows to acquire pulse-resolved data despite the high repetition rates of the x-ray pulses. The same configuration is used in an X-ray spectrometer at the SQS instrument. In this thesis, the spatial resolution of the Timepix3-based camera in the setups at the SQS instrument is characterized after post-processing of the data. The impact of the voltages applied to the MCPs and the phosphor screen, as well as settings of the Timepix3 chip, on the spatial resolution are analysed. The performance of the different MCP-Phosphor stacks employed at the SQS instrument are compared, and the settings to obtain the best spatial resolution are described. Further, uncertainties concerning the time over threshold recorded by the camera are found and ascribed to aberrations of the lens system and differences between individual pixels on the Timepix3 chip.
