Effect of Extraction Methods on Plumbagin Contend of Drosera Capensis L. Multiplicated by Tissue Culture Method
The cape sundew (Drosera capensis L.) is a carnivorous plant native to South Africa that is preferred as an indoor ornamental plant [1]. It has been determined by many studies that some components contained in the plant are used for antimicrobial and antifungal purposes and prevent tumor formation [2,3,4] (Ahmad et.al., 2008; Kuo et.al., 2006; Ríos ve Recio, 2005). In this study, it is aimed to determine the extraction methods on the highest plumbagin yield in D. capensis plant material propagated by tissue culture method. In the study, the most suitable propagation method of the D. capensis was determined by tissue culture method, and the appropriate extraction method was determined by extracting the plumbagin amounts in the plant content with soxhlet, microwave and ultrasound methods. The most important contribution of the study to the academic literature is the extraction method for the validation processes of standardizing D. capensis as a pharmaceutical raw material. At the end of the study, the highest plumbagin yield (33.016 mg/mL) was obtained using microwave-assisted extraction with 80% ethanol for 60 seconds. This result supports that it facilitates the dissolution of bioactive compounds and provides high efficiency, thanks to rapid energy transfer and effective cell wall destruction.
