The influence of information technology on human resource management of telecommunications companies in Jordan

Purpose This study explores the influence of information technology (IT) determinants – specifically IT knowledge, IT operations and IT infrastructure – on human resource management (HRM) practices within Jordan's telecommunications sector. The study aims to understand how these IT factors enhance human resources (HR) functions like training and development, recruitment and performance management (PM) to improve organizational outcomes. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research design was employed to examine the impact of IT determinants on HRM practices. The study sampled 330 managerial-level employees from three telecommunications companies: Umniah, Zain and Orange. Data collection was conducted through a structured, closed-ended questionnaire and the analysis used multiple regression techniques to assess the impact of IT determinants on HRM practices. Findings The results demonstrate that IT infrastructure has the strongest positive effect on HRM practices (β = 0.512, p < 0.001), particularly in supporting recruitment and training processes. IT knowledge significantly enhances PM by enabling data-driven evaluations, while efficient IT operations facilitate seamless execution of HR functions. These findings underscore the critical role of integrating IT capabilities into HRM strategies, especially within the telecommunications industry, to drive operational efficiency and gain a competitive advantage. Practical implications Telecommunications firms can leverage IT resources to optimize HRM processes, enhancing organizational performance. IT knowledge, operations and infrastructure investments are essential for attracting talent, fostering continuous employee development and achieving strategic HR objectives in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Originality/value This study fills a gap in the existing literature by examining the combined influence of IT knowledge, operations, and infrastructure on HRM practices in a technology-intensive sector. The findings contribute to the resource-based view theory by demonstrating how IT capabilities are strategic assets that improve HRM effectiveness.
