Ixiolite-(Sc), (Ta 0.5 Sc 0.5 )O 2 , a new columbite-supergroup mineral from the Heftetjern pegmatite, Tørdal, Telemark, Norway
Scandium-rich members of the ixiolite group have been reported for decades from the Sveconorwegian Heftetjern pegmatite (Trdal, Telemark, Norway), but their mineralogical taxonomic status remained unresolved. Here we characterize and describe ixiolite-(Sc), a new ixiolite-group member (IMA 2025-054), with the ideal formula (Ta 0.5 Sc 0.5 )O 2 .The mineral occurs as dull black, submetallic, opaque aggregates up to 2-3 mm (locally reported as prismatic crystals to 5 mm), partly altered to a secondary Sc-rich microlite-group phase. It is associated with albite, quartz, fluorite, spessartine and microlite-group minerals, and is interpreted as a primary accessory phase crystallized from Sc-enriched late-stage pegmatitic
